چکیده

Introduction The whitefly Bemisia tabaci Genn. (Homoptera:Aleyrodidae) has caused millions of dollars worth of crop losses in tropical and subtropical agricultural regions in the five continents of the world (Brown, 1994). Besides the direct damage caused by B. tabaci (plant nutrient loss; physiological disorders; honey dew excretions, etc), the sweet potato or cotton whitefly is an efficient vector of numerous geminiviruses (plant viruses consisting of two ‘twined’ or ‘geminate’ particles, encapsidating one or two single -stranded DNA genomes). The geminiviruses transmitted by B. tabaci belong to the genus Begomovirus (sigla for the type species, Bean golden mosaic virus), according to current taxonomic classification (Regenmortel et al., 2000). These viruses infect a large number of cultivated plant species, following their transmission by B. tabaci from wild or other cultivated hosts (Padidam et al., 1999). Currently, over 100 begomoviruses are transmitted by at least two biotypes of the whitefly B. tabaci, to more than 20 different cultivated species of socioeconomic importance. The main food crops affected by whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses are: common bean, mung bean, blackgram, lima bean, soybean, cowpea, tomato, potato, eggplant, pepper, chili peppers, melon, watermelon, squash, okra and cassava (Muniyapa, 1980; Brown, 1994). The extreme pathogenicity and severe yield losses induced by begomoviruses, and absence of immune genotypes in most of the plant species attacked, has led to considerable pesticide abuse in order to control the whitefly vector. As a result, B. tabaci has developed resistance to most of the insecticides used in the past.

Genetic Diversity in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and Its Wild Relatives

Tomato, ranking 1st in the world for vegetables, accounts for 14% of world vegetable production (over 100 million metric tons/year $ 1.6 billion market; (Food and Agriculture Organisation [FAO] 2010). Tomato is a rich source of micronutrients for human diet. It is also an acknowledged model species for research on fruit development and metabolite accumulation. The major goals of tomato breeders...

Domestication and Breeding of Tomatoes: What have We Gained and What Can We Gain in the Future?

BACKGROUND It has been shown that a large variation is present and exploitable from wild Solanum species but most of it is still untapped. Considering the thousands of Solanum accessions in different gene banks and probably even more that are still untouched in the Andes, it is a challenge to exploit the diversity of tomato. What have we gained from tomato domestication and breeding and what ca...

Use of Natural Diversity and Biotechnology to Increase the Quality and Nutritional Content of Tomato and Grape

Improving fruit quality has become a major goal in plant breeding. Direct approaches to tackling fruit quality traits specifically linked to consumer preferences and environmental friendliness, such as improved flavor, nutraceutical compounds, and sustainability, have slowly been added to a breeder priority list that already includes traits like productivity, efficiency, and, especially, pest a...

Science and Culture: Vegetable breeders turn to chefs for flavor boost.

Last August, four chefs sat around a table in a Madison, WI, restaurant, each with small samples of 10 tomato varieties. With nary a word spoken, the chefs tasted each morsel, then rated the flavor along dimensions represented by axes drawn on paper. Tomatoes high in sweetness and acidity fell on the right. Those high in umami, a savory flavor, were grouped in the bottom left. Tomato flights ar...

Review Paper: Roundtable on Bioterrorism Detection: Information System-based Surveillance

During the 2001 AMIA Annual Symposium, the Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Emergency Medicine Working Group hosted the Roundtable on Bioterrorism Detection. Sixty-four people attended the roundtable discussion, during which several researchers discussed public health surveillance systems designed to enhance early detection of bioterrorism events. These systems make secondary use of existing clin...
